Gelco Flue Liner Replacement: The Dallas Owner’s Guide
If you have a Gelco flue liner that’s cracked, pitted, or separating at the seams, we stock Gelco-compatible replacement liners and can typically have the old section pulled and the new one installed in a single visit. For most Dallas homes, a Gelco flue liner replacement runs between $1,100 and $2,400 installed depending on the length of the run, flue dimensions, and whether we’re replacing a section or the full liner from firebox to crown. That price includes the liner itself, all connection hardware, the labor to pull and reset, and our written guarantee on the completed work.
Here’s how owners usually discover the liner has failed: they call us for an annual sweep, and our camera inspection shows hairline cracks or a separated seam about eighteen inches above the firebox. Or they notice flaking metal pieces in the firebox. Or a home inspector flags it during a sale. The Gelco part is a double-wall stainless steel chimney liner, and when it fails, it fails in a predictable way: the inner wall corrodes first, then the outer wall develops pinholes, and flue gases start leaking into the chimney chase instead of going up and out. That’s a carbon monoxide risk you can’t smell or see, which is exactly why a camera inspection before any recommendation matters.
Which Gelco Models This Applies To
Gelco (sometimes written as Gelco Chimney or under the Gelco Manufacturing label) produced rigid and flexible double-wall stainless liners for both wood-burning and gas fireplaces, most commonly in 6-inch, 8-inch, and 10-inch diameters. If you have a wood-burning prefab fireplace built between roughly 1985 and 2010, there’s a solid chance the original liner is Gelco – especially in Dallas, where tract builders in neighborhoods like Lake Highlands, Garland, and Mesquite commonly specified Gelco prefab systems. We see them frequently enough that identifying one takes about ten minutes.
The most reliable way to confirm is the metal identification tag, usually riveted to the firebox sidewall or stamped on the liner’s first section above the smoke shelf. It will list the model number, tested clearances, and the factory serial. If the tag is gone – and after 30 years, many are – we confirm by measuring inside diameter and noting the seam pattern. Gelco’s twist-lock seam profile is distinct from competitors; it’s a finer pitch than what you’ll see on DuraFlex or Copperfield. That’s the compatibility gotcha worth knowing: you cannot safely mix a random 6-inch liner with a Gelco firebox just because the diameter matches. The firebox manufacturer’s listing requires a compatible liner system that matches the firebox’s tested design. That’s why as an independent Dallas chimney company, we carry actual Gelco-compatible liner sections plus DuraFlex and HeatShield systems on our trucks, so we’re not guessing and bolting in a hardware-store substitute.
If you do need a replacement part but we’re talking gas venting, not wood-burning, that might be a different conversation. Gas fireplaces often share Gelco components, but we’ll need to positively identify what you have before quoting. Some older Gelco parts are no longer manufactured; in those cases we tell you plainly, and we recommend a current UL-listed replacement rather than hunting down a barn-fresh “new old stock” part on an auction site. The safety standard is more important than the brand badge.

Signs Your Gelco Flue Liner Replacement Is Failing
You don’t need to climb the roof to know a liner is headed south. These are the five signs we hear about most often on calls across Dallas, and what each one actually means:
- Flakes or metallic debris in the firebox. This is the inner liner wall scaling off – typically from years of flue-gas condensation plus our North Texas humidity swings. Once you see flakes, the inner wall has already lost structural integrity.
- A sulfur smell, even when there’s no fire. Flue gases back-drafting through a crack, especially during cold snaps when the stack effect reverses. That odor isn’t coming from clean wood or a clean flue, and it shouldn’t be ignored.
- Cracks in the firebox refractory panels. Often a sign the liner above is pulling out of alignment or has lost its anchor points, putting stress on the firebox. A cracked refractory panel is commonly paired with a dropped liner section.
- Visible rust streaks or pinhole light through the flue. For two-story Dallas homes, we’ll occasionally run a camera and find pinholing you could only see with a borescope. But if you can see light through the liner at the first visible section, it’s done.
- Water in the firebox after storms. It could be the cap or crown, but if water’s getting inside the flue, it’s entering through a failed seam or a separated liner joint – exactly where pitting and corrosion start.
If you’re seeing any of these, what you’re really seeing is the end of the liner’s service life, not a fixable nuisance. A sweeping service doesn’t address a failed liner, and we’ll tell you the difference honestly.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
Let’s put real numbers on it, because vague estimates are what we’re here to avoid. For a Gelco flue liner replacement in the Dallas area:
- Single-section repair (upper liner or mid-flue): $1,100 to $1,700 installed.
- Full liner replacement from firebox to crown (single-story): $1,400 to $2,000 installed.
- Full liner replacement (two-story): $1,800 to $2,400 installed.
What drives the range? The length and diameter of the liner run, whether the firebox needs refractory panels replaced at the same time (we’ll show you why if it does), and whether the crown and cap need resealing while we’re up there. The parts cost is the smaller variable; most of the spread is labor, chimney access, and whether your Dallas suburb’s home has a chase that’s three stories at the roofline.
Every Gelco liner replacement quote we give includes the liner, all connectors, the camera inspection before and after, debris removal, and a written guarantee on the work. If the part or the installation fails within the first year, the second visit and the fix are free. We don’t charge extra for the guarantee, and we put it in writing before we start – not as a verbal afterthought.
DIY or Call Us?
There’s a reason chimney liner replacement isn’t a weekend YouTube project, and it’s not gatekeeping. You’re working at height, often on a steep Dallas roof pitch, manhandling a 30- to 40-pound liner section through a chase, and creating gas-tight connections that a firebox was never designed to forgive if they leak. The risk is both physical (falling, dropping a section through the chase) and invisible (a badly joined seam that tests fine visually but leaks carbon monoxide into the house). That’s why even most general contractors won’t touch a liner replacement – they sub it out to chimney specialists.
What you can do yourself is assembly and documentation. Take clear photos of the firebox tag, any visible liner damage, and the inside of the flue with your phone’s flash. Measure the firebox opening. That gives us a real head start on the quote. We’ll confirm everything with a camera inspection when we get there, and then the work goes fast – most full Gelco liner replacements clock in around half a day. Call (361) 264-4483 and we’ll talk it through in plain English.
FAQs
In our experience across Dallas, a Gelco flue liner gives you 20 to 35 years of useful service before the inner wall starts pitting or the seams begin to separate. Wood-burning fireplaces that got regular use tend to be on the lower end, especially if the previous homeowner burned green Hackberry or cedar with high moisture content. Gas-burning setups last longer. If you’re past the 25-year mark and the liner is original, budget for a replacement in the next 12 to 24 months even if it looks fine from above. Call (361) 264-4483 if you want us to put a camera up there and tell you exactly where yours stands.
If only one section has failed and the rest of the run passes camera inspection, we can often replace just the damaged section rather than the full flue. A single-section repair usually saves $300 to $700 compared to a full liner replacement. But if the firebox is pulling out of alignment, the refractory panels are cracked, or the flue tile behind the liner is compromised, patching one section just moves the failure to another spot. That’s exactly the kind of thing our camera inspection documents before we recommend anything.
For the actual work, expect 3 to 5 hours for a typical single-story Dallas home, including removal, installation, and the post-install camera verification. Two-story runs or difficult roof access push that to 5 to 7 hours. Most customers book us in the morning and have the fireplace back in service by the evening. We’ll tell you the exact time before we start – that’s just how we operate.
Yes, we carry Gelco-compatible liner sections in the most common Dallas sizes during the burning season, along with DuraFlex, HeatShield, Olympia Chimney, Famco, and Copperfield systems. That’s based on what we actually see in Dallas homes, not what a national catalog tells us to carry. If you have an odd older model we don’t have on the truck, we can source the correct part and return to install. Call (361) 264-4483 with your firebox tag details and we’ll confirm we’ve got it before the first visit.
