Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
DuraFlex Chimney Cap Installation: The Dallas Owner’s Guide
A DuraFlex chimney cap installation in Dallas typically runs $240 to $485 installed, depending on the liner diameter, roof access, and whether the old cap has corroded to the point that the flue tile needs minor prep work. We keep the most common DuraFlex-compatible caps in 6-inch and 8-inch diameters on the truck, so most Dallas jobs are done in a single visit without a second trip. Where homeowners usually discover the problem first is a drip line running down the brick chase, a wet firebox after a hard rain, or a scraping noise on windy nights when the cap has loosened from the flue tile. Sometimes a neighbor mentions it first, pointing out that the cap has tilted or the mesh screen has rusted through.
Which DuraFlex Models This Applies To
DuraFlex liner systems are built around three main diameter sizes: 6-inch, 7-inch, and 8-inch. The chimney cap has to match the liner’s inner diameter at the flue exit, not the outer masonry dimension. That measurement trips up a lot of Dallas homeowners, because a cap that looks right from the ground may be off by half an inch once you’re on the roof and measuring the actual DuraFlex collar. A 6-inch DuraFlex liner uses a cap with a 6-inch slip-in base; an 8-inch liner needs an 8-inch base. They are not interchangeable, and using a reducer ring to make a wrong-sized cap fit will restrict draft and whistle in a North Texas wind. We specify DuraFlex’s own caps where the warranty is still active, or pro-grade equivalents from Olympia Chimney and Copperfield when the liner is outside its warranty window and the homeowner wants to control cost. Both meet the same code requirements. The honest difference is paperwork and a slightly heavier gauge on the OEM unit. If you’re not sure what size liner you have, look for the DuraFlex label inside the lower cleanout or check the paper tag wired to the liner crown. No label? Measure the inside diameter of the liner mouth with a tape measure, not the outside edge.

Signs Your DuraFlex Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing
- Water streaks on the chase or hearth after rain. The cap’s underside seam has opened or the caulked joint at the flue tile has failed. In Dallas, the freeze-thaw cycle between February ice and July heat causes the sealant to lift. Water follows the open seam into the chase, then down.
- Rust flakes or rust-colored staining around the cap’s mesh screen. Galvanized mesh eventually gives out, especially with creosote sitting on it from a wood-burning fireplace. Replacing the mesh is not a field repair. The cap is replaced.
- You hear a scraping or clicking on windy nights. The cap’s clamp screws have backed off, or the old clay flue tile it sits over has started spalling. A loose cap wearing against the tile will score it deeper every storm front.
- Birds, squirrels, or rooftop debris keep finding their way in. The mesh is no longer intact or the cap has shifted enough to leave a gap at the crown. Dead birds in the firebox are a call we take multiple times a spring in Dallas.
- The cap has tilted visibly. That means the flue tile under it is cracked, or the original installer seated the cap over a decaying crown without a solid base. A tilted cap catches wind like a sail and accelerates the failure.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
For Dallas, a standard DuraFlex chimney cap replacement with parts and labor runs about $240 to $485. The spread depends on liner diameter, whether the flue tile needs light grinding to seat the new cap correctly, and roof pitch. A 6-inch cap on a walkable one-story roof lands at the low end. An 8-inch cap on a steep two-story with the old cap corroded in place lands higher. We do not charge a separate “roof access” fee and we do not surprise you with a part price after the fact. You get a written price before any work starts. That price includes the cap, the mechanical connection to the liner or flue tile, and the high-temperature sealant. The work carries a written guarantee, and if the repair fails within the guarantee period, the second visit is free. We also photo-document the before and after so you can see what you paid for from the ground.
If the cap failed because the liner itself is rusted at the top, we will show you the camera evidence before telling you to replace anything. No cap on earth fixes a liner that has already rotted at the flue mouth.

AfterDuraFlex Chimney Cap Replacement: What We Check Before Quoting
- Liner ID measurement. 6-inch, 7-inch, or 8-inch. The cap must match the liner mouth exactly.
- Flue tile condition. Cracked or spalling tile needs a fill-and-level before the new cap seats. Skipping this step is why some Dallas caps fail within two years.
- Crown condition. A crown that is visibly eroded lets water get behind the cap base no matter how good the sealant is.
- Existing cap hardware. Rusted screws get replaced with stainless. Never reusing hardware saves us warranty callbacks, which saves you a roof visit.
- Draft check after install. We verify the fireplace still draws before we get off the roof.
Do You Stock DuraFlex Caps or Do I Need to Order One?
We stock the 6-inch and 8-inch DuraFlex-compatible caps on the service truck. The 7-inch is a special order in most Dallas supply houses, and we tell you that upfront instead of improvising with a reducer. If you have a 7-inch liner and the cap has failed, we can usually have the correct part within a few business days through our normal suppliers. If the liner is still under DuraFlex warranty, we will coordinate and document for a warranty claim. What we will not do is sell you a wrong-sized cap and wrap it in a reducer kit to make the invoice close. That reduces draft, and in a Dallas July, reduced draft on a wood stove is not something you want.
DIY or Call Us?
If your roof is a walkable single story and you are comfortable with a tape measure, you can safely identify your liner size and check whether the cap is loose, tilted, or rusted through. That information makes your phone call faster and gets you an accurate written estimate sooner. What you should not do is attempt to reseat a heavy flue cap while balancing on a damp roof or a Dallas clay tile that is already breaking underfoot. And we do not recommend climbing a two-story to unpack a stuck cap without fall protection. The truck has the brackets, the sealant, the stainless hardware, and a second set of eyes on the ground. Call us if the roof is steep, the cap is stuck fast, or you would rather have the entire job documented and guaranteed. The phone number is (361) 264-4483.
FAQs
Expect 8 to 12 years in Dallas weather. The mesh is usually the first component to go, followed by the seam seal, especially on caps exposed to full afternoon sun and the freeze-thaw cycle we get from January to March. If the installer reused old hardware or skipped the sealant, you may see failures inside five years. Call us at (361) 264-4483 for a written quote if your cap is at or past the 10-year mark.
In our experience, no. Once the mesh has rusted through or the welded seam has opened, patching is temporary and you will be back on the roof within a year or two. Replacing the cap is the only repair that carries a meaningful guarantee. We will always show you exactly what failed before we quote the replacement.
A standard DuraFlex chimney cap replacement in Dallas takes about 60 to 90 minutes from ladder up to ladder down, assuming the flue tile and crown do not need additional work. If the old cap has corroded onto the tile, add time and we will tell you before work starts. Most jobs are a single visit.
Yes. We also carry caps sized for HeatShield and Gelco liner systems, along with the pro-grade equivalents from Olympia Chimney and Copperfield. The measurement requirement is the same: liner inside diameter at the flue mouth. Tell us the liner brand and diameter when you call and we will confirm what is on the truck.
