Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Gelco Chimney Cap Installation: The Dallas Owner’s Guide
A Gelco chimney cap installation in Dallas typically runs $385 to $690 installed, including the cap, mounting hardware, and labor, and our truck usually carries common Gelco sizes so we can often complete the job in a single visit. Most Dallas homeowners discover a failed Gelco cap one of two ways: water staining around the chimney chase on the ceiling after a hard rain, or when they actually see the cap sitting crooked or missing entirely after a storm season. The cap may look like a simple piece of metal, but in North Texas weather, it’s what keeps rain out of your flue and keeps embers from landing on the roof.
At Alcott Chimney Dallas, we stock and install Gelco-compatible chimney caps, and we replace failed Gelco caps throughout the Dallas area on a regular basis. We’re an independent service provider, not affiliated with Gelco, which means we get to give you a straight answer about cost and compatibility without any brand pressure.
Which Gelco Models This Applies To
Gelco chimney caps come in several lines, and the most common models we install in Dallas homes are the Gelco Standard Mesh series (often model numbers starting with CM or CSM) and the Gelco Outside Mount caps for brick chimneys, plus Gelco Top Mount caps that fit directly on round flue tiles. The key measurement that determines compatibility isn’t just the cap brand; it’s the flue tile opening. A Gelco cap that fits a 13×13 flue won’t fit a 9×13 flue, and in older Dallas neighborhoods like Lake Highlands and Casa View, we see plenty of 9×13 flues that were capped incorrectly years ago with the wrong size and left to rattle in the wind.
When we assess a Gelco cap replacement, we always check whether the existing cap was OEM Gelco or an aftermarket universal equivalent. Both can work well, but the Gelco-specific mesh and stainless construction generally holds up longer than thin aftermarket copies, especially with the hail we get. If you still have the old cap, look for the Gelco name stamped into the base or lid. If you don’t, we measure the flue opening and confirm the correct outside mount or top mount fit before we ever quote a price.

Signs Your Gelco Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing
- Water staining around the chimney chase or ceiling. This is the most common first sign in Dallas. The Gelco cap’s base flashing or the cap itself has shifted, letting rain run down the chase or flue. Left alone, it causes drywall damage and warped framing.
- Rust or corrosion on the cap’s mesh or base. Gelco caps are usually galvanized or stainless, but years of Texas humidity and roof runoff will eventually break through the coating. Once rust starts, the mesh deteriorates and no longer blocks embers effectively.
- The cap sits crooked or rattles in high wind. The mounting screws have loosened or the mortar around the flue tile has crumbled. North Texas storms are hard enough on roof-mounted hardware; a loose cap bangs against the flue and can crack it.
- Bird or pest activity in the chimney. A torn or pushed-in mesh is a welcome sign for Dallas grackles and squirrels. If you hear scratching or chirping from the flue, the cap mesh has failed and needs replacement, not patching.
- Visible creosote buildup on the cap’s underside. This means the cap is working as a spark arrestor but the flue itself needs attention. It also means the mesh is partially clogged, reducing draft and causing smoke to back up into the house on windy days.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
A Gelco chimney cap replacement in the Dallas market usually falls between $385 and $690 installed. The lower end assumes a direct size-for-size swap on a standard flue with the existing mortar in good shape. The higher end covers larger multi-flue caps, caps for odd-sized flues, or jobs where the flue tile crown needs repair before the new cap can be mounted securely.
That price includes the Gelco or Gelco-compatible cap itself, stainless or galvanized mounting hardware, the labor, and our written price you approve before any work starts. Every repair we do is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the cap installation fails within the first year, we return and make it right at no charge. Ruben Castellano’s rule for the crew is simple: quote the full price before the work, never after.

If your chimney chase is accessible from a standard ladder and you just want to visually confirm the cap is damaged, that’s a job a careful homeowner can do. Take a photo and check whether the cap is clearly bent, rusted through, or pushed off center. What we don’t recommend is climbing onto the roof to remove or replace a chimney cap yourself, especially on a two-story Dallas home where the chimney chase follows the roof pitch. One misstep on a steep roof is a serious injury and an expensive hospital bill. The cap is light, but the work happens at height, and working around an active flue opening isn’t where you learn roof safety.
If the cap is loose, rusted, or letting in water, call us at (361) 264-4483. We assess the flue condition, confirm the right Gelco size, and get you a written quote while we’re there.
FAQs
A Gelco chimney cap typically lasts 8 to 15 years in Dallas, depending on roof exposure, hail frequency, and whether the cap is stainless or galvanized. Stainless Gelco caps hold up longer; galvanized caps show rust sooner, especially facing the western afternoon sun and storm runoff. If yours is over 12 years old and you can see rust through the mesh, it’s time to replace it. Call (361) 264-4483 if you want us to inspect it before you commit.
Most damaged Gelco caps should be replaced rather than patched, because the failure point is almost always rusted-through mesh or a bent frame that weakens the overall structure. If only the mounting screws have loosened and the cap is still solid, we can often re-secure it without a full replacement, and we’ll tell you which option is cheaper and safe. Call us at (361) 264-4483 for an honest assessment either way.
A standard Gelco cap swap on a single flue usually takes 45 minutes to 2 hours, from ladder setup to final check. If the flue tile crown needs mortar work or we need to fabricate a custom bracket, that adds time. We give you the full time estimate with your written price before work starts.
We carry the most common Gelco cap sizes for Dallas flues on the truck, along with Gelco-compatible mounting hardware. If you have an unusual flue size or a multi-flue chase, we’ll need to order the specific cap, which usually takes a few business days. When you schedule, we ask for your flue measurements so we can bring the right cap the first time.
